Tết and trips easily become the promise “I’ll restart in January.” In practice, two fully loose weeks then a harsh clamp usually tire you more than keeping two movement sessions, protein at main meals, and walking — then returning to the old schedule when you are back. The holiday goal is not perfection; the goal is not losing the identity of someone who trains consistently.
Mindset before the break: maintain, do not wreck-and-rebuild
You do not need a deficit in every year-end feast. You need to avoid a 14-day streak of zero sessions + chaotic sleep + only sweets–alcohol if the long-term goal still matters. Maintenance means:
- Keep at least 2 sessions (light weights, bodyweight, or intentional long walks).
- Try for protein at each main meal: braised meat, fish, eggs, tofu, yogurt…
- Walk after meals or make New Year visits on foot when it fits.
- Do not compensatory-fast on the morning of the 1st to “atone” for the 30th night.
Returning to the old schedule the first week after Tết beats setting 10 new KPIs on day one.
Sample 10-day plan (edit to real dates)
| Days | Movement | Nutrition anchors |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 (before the break) | Full lifting sessions as scheduled | Meal-prep a few protein boxes if traveling |
| 3–5 | 1 technique lift or 20–30 minute circuit | Protein each main meal; vegetables/soup if available |
| 6–8 | Lots of walking; 1 short session | Flexible Tết foods; no compensatory fasting |
| 9–10 | Return session near the old schedule | Back to familiar frame; earlier bedtime |
Abroad/hotel travel: find a room workout (squat, single-leg hinge, push-up progressions, towel row), or a 25-minute hotel gym. Compact spirit: 30-minute home training.
Protein and Tết dishes
The feast table already has protein — use it:
- Meat, shrimp, fish, eggs, sausage (mindful portion), tofu.
- Add boiled vegetables/soup if the table leans fried–sweet.
- Candies/cakes: pick a few memorable pieces; avoid grazing a whole box because “it’s Tết.”
Alcohol: if you drink, alternate water; do not stack a harsh calorie cut the next day. Reward the trip with experiences — same spirit as reward progress without a punishment food day.
Walking: an underrated tool
10–20 minutes after meals or 7–10k steps on travel days help digestion and keep NEAT — not a magic fat burn. Walking does not replace long-term lifting, but it keeps you out of “lie–eat–lie” mode all week.
The week after: no extreme day-1
- Reopen the fixed schedule week one — normal volume or 10–20% lighter if tired.
- No internet water–tea detoxes.
- The scale may be high from glycogen–salt–gut contents; read averages and waist after 1–2 weeks.
- If motivation is gone after the break, use the 20-minute rule in training when motivation is gone.
January only needs a return — not becoming someone else.
Minimal suitcase for people who want to keep momentum
- Training shoes + moisture-wicking top.
- Band or jump rope if you like (optional).
- Notes for 3 prewritten “rescue” moves.
- A small container / protein powder only if you actually use it — do not pack for show.
FAQ
I gained 2 kg after Tết — is it all fat?
Usually not entirely fat. Keep the schedule and protein 1–2 weeks then read the trend. A panic cut on the 5th often leads to quitting mid-month.
Only 4 days off — still need a plan?
It can be simpler: one short mid-break session + walking + protein. Still be intentional so it does not slide into two weeks.
Family pressure to eat — how to handle?
Eat the dishes they are proud of in moderate portions, praise sincerely, keep protein and vegetables, politely decline second helpings when full. Family relationships matter more than “clean calories” at every Tết meal.
